Wiped!

We received finished copies from the printers of the paperback and hardback editions of WIPED today - it looks stunning!

As we are heavily involved in the SciFi Weekender this coming weekend, we won't be able to despatch the paperback copies until after that, early next week.

The Hardback copies need to be signed by the author, and so won't be despatched until that has happened.

I'll try and post here to keep people updated as to the status over the next week or so regarding the book.

http://www.telos.me.uk/category.php?id=6#141

05/03/13 - Update on the status of WIPED. We have just finished packing the paperback orders, which should go off to the post office tomorrow if all goes well (Sam has been sick with Con Crud, so we're hoping she's up to taking them ... if not, then they will go as soon as we can get them there). On the Hardback, Richard should be signing these Tuesday next week, so they will be despatched thereafter.

09/03/13 - Update on WIPED. We have sent out all the pre-orders of the paperback now. And our distributors should now (or will on Monday) have copies of the paperback as well - so Amazon orders should be filled shortly after. Richard is currently planning to visit to sign the hardbacks on Tuesday next week, and these copies will therefore be sent out as soon as that has happened.

13/03/13 - Update on WIPED - Had a lovely time yesterday with Richard Molesworth, signing all the hardbacks. So these will hopefully be packed up and despatched today, along with a handful of paperback orders from the last few days.

TELOS PUBLISHING NEWSLETTER - 24 February 2013

Welcome to another newsletter from Telos Publishing.

Yesterday I learned, with sadness and a heavy heart, that Telos' good friend Raymond P Cusick died from a heart attack last week, on Thursday 21st February. Ray was one of the original designers to have worked on the Classic series of Doctor Who, and by far his greatest achievement was the design of the Daleks - agurably without his iconic visualisation, the show itself may not have survived to be fifty this year. There are several tributes and news reports across the web at the moment, but here's one which seems to cover his career best:

http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2013/02/raymond-cusick-230213232008.html

And on YouTube, a copy of the DVD extra where Ray attended the BBC's design workshops for the new series is available to watch (a visit that I suggested and facilitated even though I didn't get to go myself!):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3HC3Wl9UY8

Our book celebrating Ray's work - The Raymond P Cusick Signature Collection - should still be published, but we are, out of courtesy, checking with Ray's family on that to ensure that there are no unforseeen issues in this regard. Ray had also completed the signature plates for the book, so we will be able to offer the limited hardback as a special signed edition as planned, again subject to the family being OK with this.

Onto happier news, and there's a slew of news about new titles to announce, some of which we have more details on than others.

NEW ARRIVALS

Wiped! Doctor Who's Missing Episodes: Second Edition
by Richard Molesworth
PUBLISHED: March 2013

In the 1960s, the BBC screened 253 episodes of its cult science fiction show Doctor Who, starring William Hartnell and then Patrick Troughton as the time travelling Doctor. Yet by 1975, the Corporation had wiped the master tapes of every single one of these episodes. Yet by 1975, the Corporation had wiped the master tapes of every single one of these episodes. Of the 124 Doctor Who episodes starring Jon Pertwee shown between 1970 and 1974, the BBC destroyed over half of the original transmission tapes within two years of their original broadcast.

In the years that followed, the BBC, along with dedicated fans of the series, began the arduous task of trying to track down copies of as many missing Doctor Who episodes as possible. The search covered BBC sales vaults, foreign television stations, overseas archives, and numerous networks of private film collectors, until the tally of missing programmes was reduced to just 106 episodes.

For the first time, this book looks in detail at how the episodes came to be missing in the first place, and examines how material subsequently came to be returned to the BBC. Along the way, those people involved in the recovery of lost slices of Doctor Who's past tell their stories in candid detail, many for the very first time. This second edition updates the story with details of the recent episode discoveries from 'Galaxy 4' and 'The Underwater Menace' as well as general updates, corrections and revisions throughout.

No more rumours, no more misinformation, no more fan gossip. The truth about Doctor Who's missing episodes can now be told in full!

'A labour of love that’s clearly involved an immense amount of painstaking research' SFX

'This is a cracker of a book that lays to rest many myths (and confirms many more).' Total SciFi Online

'Exhaustively researched and fascinating' SciFi Online

'If you want to know the full story behind the lost Doctor Who stories and how they were got back then this is the authoritative book to own and should be on your reading list. A brilliant study.' SF Crowsnest

TELOS MOONRISE

After much consideration and planning, we are delighted to announce the launch of Telos Moonrise, a new digital and POD imprint for Telos, which we hope will expand to cover a wider variety of fiction than we are currently able to undertake in the more traditional publishing lines. Titles are planned to be made available in ebook formats for Kindle, Kobo and Nook, and for those who still love books, all the titles will also be available as print on demand paperbacks via Amazon.

Consultant and editor for the imprint is Sam Stone, herself an acclaimed and award-winning author, and she will be commissioning and looking for titles in all four of the initial lines which are planned:

o ‘Steampunk Visions’: Explore alternate worlds, past, present and future in our exciting new Steampunk range. There will be action, adventure and, of course, superb gadgets.

o ‘Criminal Pursuits’: Look into the darkest depths of the criminal mind and explore the darker side of humanity with our Crime and Thriller titles.

o ‘Dark Endeavours’: Delve into the supernatural, urban and dark fantasy, or the darkest horror imaginable. Or simply explore fantasy realms and alternate worlds where anything can happen from myth and magic to sword-wielding warriors.

o ‘Sinful Pleasures’: Brings sexual fantasies, love or simply unbridled lust, with good strong stories, believable characters and a large helping of erotica in all its forms.

Telos Moonrise launches with a ‘Dark Endeavours’ title: Absinthe and Arsenic, a collection of dark, mysterious and comedic tales by award winning dark fantasy and steampunk author Raven Dane.

Details of publication dates and other details will be available as soon as they are confirmed. We will make submission guidelines available on the Telos site as soon as they have been finalised, and when the range is opened for unsolicited submissions. Please keep an eye on the Telos news page, and the Telos Facebook page for details.

Still The Beast Is Feeding: Forty Years of Rocky Horror
by Rob Bagnall & Phil Barden
PUBLISHED: end April 2013

'The stage show is a theatrical phenomenon, and the movie adaptation a cult classic,' says Stephen James Walker, 'and we at Telos Publishing are proud to add this title to our roster. We are known for our books on cult television and film, and this seems like a logical subject for us to be covering.'

Born in a tiny attic theatre on a dark and stormy night in the Summer of 1973, The Rocky Horror Show was an immediate hit with audiences and critics alike, and a much-needed shot in the arm for London’s jaded theatre-scene.

Four decades on, Richard O’Brien’s hilarious cross-dressing tribute to trashy B-movies, ’50s sci-fi, sexual liberation, gothic horror and rock ’n’ roll has been seen in over 30 countries and translated into more than 20 languages, and it continues to pull in the crowds and attract legions of new fans, while the 1975 film version - now the longest continually playing theatrical release in cinema history - generated an unparalleled cult following which took the concept of audience participation to unheard of levels of immersive enthusiasm.

Exhaustively researched, this book chronicles the extraordinary history, continued evolution and enduring legacy of this immortal tale of a sex-crazed transvestite scientist, extra-terrestrial subterfuge, corruption of the innocent and the creation of life.

Incorporating a wealth of archival material, personal memories and new interviews with contributors and participants from every era of Rocky Horror history, the authors explore the show’s origins and influences; the creation of the original London stage production; the numerous national and international revivals; the making of the movie; and the fanatical fishnet following which continues to define the Rocky Horror experience.

So, ‘throw open the switches on the Sonic Oscillator’, and celebrate a monstrous musical milestone as The Rocky Horror Show turns forty.

500pp approx. A5 paperback book. ISBN 978-1-84583-082-3 (pb) £15.99

The Television Companion: The Unofficial and Unauthorised Guide to Doctor Who
by David J Howe and Stephen James Walker
PUBLISHED: end July 2013

Everything you ever wanted to know about the cult BBC Television series Doctor Who (1963-1996).

On its first publication in 2002, The Television Companion was hailed as possibly the best guide ever to the BBC's cult science fiction show Doctor Who. Now Telos re-issues their own edition of the book in a revised and updated version spanning two volumes, which remains the definitive guide to the television worlds and adventures of the Doctor and his companions.

Every story from 1963 to 1996 is covered in depth in all aspects of production, including plot details, cast and crew lists, episode endings, transmission dates, memorable quotes and popular myths. In addition there is a comprehensive analysis of every adventure, utilising reviews both contemporary and retrospective from a wide variety of sources.

This is the essential companion for every trip you will ever take into the TV universe of classic Doctor Who.

'The bible ...' SFX Magazine

'Another superior effort from what I consider to be the finest Doctor Who historians around. It is quite a hefty and involved read, and contains (almost) everything you'd want to know about the best SF Tv series ever.' Reviewer on Amazon.co.uk.

'If you're looking for a Doctor Who episode guide, then you can stop looking as this is by far the best book you can buy about the television series.' Sean Brady on Amazon.co.uk

'What is most memorable about The Television Companion is the fact that every story is given a balanced analysis - it's not decreed that 'Timelash' is bad, for example, rather the authors draw upon a wide variety of opposing reviews spanning the years to present a genuinely interesting study of every story - which is altogether far more interesting than cut-and-dried opinions. The Television Companion is indispensable to all fans of the television series, especially because of the detail in which the Hartnell and Troughton stories are studied. The emphasis is no more in-depth than any other era of the show, but seeing as many of their stories no longer exist, it's highly rewarding and an admirable asset to a potentially video-biased read.' Brad Schmidt in TSV (#56, October 1998)

VOLUME ONE (Doctors 1-3): 400pp approx A5 paperback. ISBN 978-1-84583-076-2. £15.99
