Welcome to Telos Towers for 2012! I thought I had released a newsletter in January, but it's not in my 'Sent' bucket so obviously I didn't! Never mind. Here we are anyway ...

We've got some great news for everyone this time about some of the titles that are in preparation for 2012 ... some old favourites, but also some new projects which will hopefully excite and interest readers. As usual, all of our books are researched and produced to the highest standards, and so you're guaranteed a good read whichever you choose.

We have a rough schedule drawn up for the first part of 2012, and what we're intending to do is to open online ordering for each title only when we're fairly certain that the book will be available when we say it will. As with the Transcendental Toybox guides, every item is pictured and listed, together with interviews with the creators, and notes, facts and figures on what has been released, and on what was planned but never saw the light of day.

Alan and Fiona penned the critically acclaimed guides to Blake's 7 and The Prisoner for Telos, and now they return with a book looking at the original series of Battlestar Galactica and Galactica 1980. There is a second volume planned which covers the new and reimagined series from 2004-2009.

As always, the work is meticulously researched, and takes in unmade scripts as well as early versions of the adventures which were transmitted.

TELOS MOVIE CLASSICS: THE HULK

In a new venture for Telos, critic Tony Lee takes us back to 2003 and the Ang Lee directed version of Marvel's Hulk, starring Eric Bana as the eponymous green giant.

We hope that this will develop into a series of titles, each looking at a different film, and providing facts and critical analysis about the subjects in question.

We kicked off with three titles in Feburary. Sam Stone's ZOMBIES IN NEW YORK AND OTHER BLOODY JOTTINGS has become one of our fiction bestsellers, and it's continuing to sell very healthy numbers every week. This is testament to Sam's brilliant writing, and that word has spread about the book and just how good it is!

TIMELINK finally saw the light of day in February as well, and this immense two-volume set by Jon Preddle has been well received.

We released two further titles in Mike Ripley's popular 'Angel' series of comic crime novels over the course of the year, and we have plans for more of these in 2012, so keep watching the site!

David J Howe's own collection of horror fiction, TALESPINNING was released in September to much acclaim, and the final two factual books of the year have also been very popular: David Crighton's HEAR THE ROAR, the guide to the original series of THUNDERCATS, hit the shops at the same time as the new series on television, and David J Howe and Arnold T Blumberg's latest update to the immense DOCTOR WHO merchandise project that is the TOYBOX has also met with appreciative comments.

For 2012 we already have several titles in the wings which are being worked on, and as soon as we have confirmed details and covers then they will be released.

HOWE'S TRANSCENDENTAL TOYBOX: UPDATE NO 3: 2006-2009

The long-awaited third update volume to the TOYBOX project is now finally available. The book was delayed due to the sheer amount of work needed to pull something like 1500 items together over the 4 year period that the volume covers, and then to get it all laid out with photographs and information, plus some additional interviews and articles which will hopefully be of interest to readers.

The final book has come in at 448 pages and so is a massive tome, and it's also in full colour throughout! Unfortunately this means that the price has had to rise to £25.99 for the book.

David J Howe and Arnold T Blumberg present the definitive collector's guide to Doctor Who merchandise. From the rare and obscure to the commonplace and disposable, every facet of Doctor Who's penetration into the marketplace is detailed.

This volume documents all the items released over 2006 and 2009, when Doctor Who cemented its position as one of the top-rated drama series in the UK, and the merchandising went into overdrive. More items were produced and released in this period than at any other point in the series' history. Also contained within is a feature on the development of the Doctor Who Pinball, an interview with the man behind the pop group Mankind, and an interview with WETA on their range of collectibles. Howe's Transcendental Toybox is both a fascinating tour through the many ways that Doctor Who has been presented in merchandise and an entertaining guide to the world of Doctor Who collecting.

This is probably going to be the last paper volume that Telos will be publishing of the Toybox. The reason? Purely that it takes such a long time to pull everything together, and there is at the moment so much being published and released that it's hard to keep on top of it all! However, there is now an online and constantly updated version of the Toybox. It can be found at http://www.howestoybox.co.uk, and as well as having a search function, details of just about everything ever released ever to do with Doctor Who, and photographs being added to try and bring it all as up to date as it can be, you can also suggest changes and corrections, and add new items and photographs yourselves. I ordered this mighty tome from Amazon (UK) the moment it came out on preorder and received it Monday. Have been pretty busy so far so only had chance to read first 30 pages (of which there are many!) and it's a fascinating insight so far.... Really interesting to hear how the whole Rankin/Bass partnership worked and how organic the creative process was. Not compared to the TV industry today I take it.....!

Had a flick through the book and cannot wait to get to the episode guide (which is like no other) - with comments from the writers, producers etc. It looks great!

SUMMER HOLIDAYS

Everyone needs holidays and the people at Telos Towers are no different, so for most of August we will be unable to fulfil orders because our Elves will be sunning themselves somewhere hot and recovering their strength for the Autumn. TELOS PUBLISHING NEWSLETTER - 24 March 2011

TIMELINK NOW AVAILABLE!

After something like 5 years in preparation, the mammoth TIMELINK: THE UNOFFICIAL GUIDE TO DOCTOR WHO CONTINUITY is finally in print and available. The pre-orders have been sent out, and it's also available in some of the Specialist stores, and other stores which carry Telos' titles.

The book has been a monster to get ready for publication, due to the sheer volume of facts and figures it contains, making it an immense challenge for us to edit, and for Arnold to lay out. We started out thinking that the book would be a 'normal' Telos guide, maybe around the size of THE TELEVISION COMPANION or THE HANDBOOK, but it became apparent when we really got into the manuscript that this wasn't going to be the case. Then we discovered that the most pages our printers could bind in one volume was around 800 ... and then Arnold came back with the initial layouts which ran to 1400 pages! It was going to have to be a two-volume book ... and so we had to figure out where to split it as it didn't readily lend itself to that. In the end we decided to put all the Doctor Who Timeline section in Vol 2, and have Vol 1 as all the textual chapters, along with timelines for Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures.

Then of course, with rising costs at the printers, we needed to ensure they were priced correctly, and at £15.99 apiece, we didn't feel that there was scope for a hardback edition as well on this occasion, as the two volumes together would have ended up at £60 or something for the special edition of both. So it's just paperback. Two volumes. One of around 550 pages and the other around 700 pages.

POSTAGE RISES

The Royal Mail has announced that UK Postage prices will be rising by around 10% on the 4th of April 2011. Their press release, taken from their site, is reproduced here:

Royal Mail announces annual stamp price rises for April 2011

Royal Mail has announced its annual stamp price rises which will take effect from 4 April 2011. Following these increases, UK stamp prices for standard letters weighing up to 100g will continue to be amongst the lowest in Europe.

The announcement follows Postcomm's decisions, published on 8 November, when the regulator said Royal Mail could increase the price of stamped mail services by 10% on average and individual stamped mail services by up to 13%. The overall increase to stamped mail prices will add around 7p to the average UK household's weekly spend of around 60p on postage.

The main price increases are:

The price of First and Second class stamps for standard items weighing up to 100g will rise by 5p to 46p and 4p to 36p respectively.

The cost of a Large Letter stamp will rise by 9p to 75p for First Class items and 7p to 58p for Second Class mail.

An increase in prices for franked mail by 3p to 39p for standard First Class items and by 3p to 28p for Second Class Mail. This is the first increase for two years on franked mail following a price freeze last year.

Moya Greene, Royal Mail's Chief Executive Officer, said: "We have thought carefully about these increases as we are conscious of the difficult economic circumstances our customers are facing. No-one likes to pay more and we regret having had to take these tough decisions on pricing. After these increases, we will continue providing value-for-money as our prices will still be among the lowest in Europe.

"We are investing heavily to modernise our operations, which is all about providing our customers with the services they need in today’s open, highly competitive postal marketplace. With the sharp declines in mail volume, our revenues are falling. That means if we don’t generate more income, we will simply not be able to keep funding our six-days-a-week collection, sorting, transport and delivery operation to the UK's 28 million homes and businesses."

Telos will be reviewing our postage charges as soon as we can to ensure that we are recovering the costs appropriately from customers. As always, we regret having to increase charges, but these things are out of our hands unfortunately.

ZOMBIES HAVE ARRIVED

We're pleased to announce that Telos' fantastic collection of short horror fiction by the acclaimed and award-winning Sam Stone have now arrived.

Copies are being processed for everyone who has pre-ordered, and they'll be despatched as soon as we can.

ZOMBIES IN NEW YORK

There has been lots of activity at Telos Towers over the Christmas and New Year break, culminating in our new horror fiction collection, Zombies in New York and Other Bloody Jottings being delivered to the printers today.

The collection is by the supremely talented Sam Stone, and it features a perceptive Foreword from Graham Masterton, one of the UK's foremost horror authors and a master of the art, as well as an affectionate Afterword from Doctor Who actor Frazer Hines.

The book also features the incredible talent of Russell Morgan who has illustrated all the stories and poems therein.

The cover is by the multiple Award winning artist Vincent Chong, and to say that we are delighted with his work on this would be an understatement.

The book will be launched in LA this coming February at the annual Gallifrey convention, but Sam Stone will be appearing at a number of bookstores and events in the UK this year to promote the book. KEEPING THEM IN STOCK

Sometimes we have a struggle to keep titles in stock, demand is so great, and so it is with WIPED, Richard Molesworth's guide to the missing episodes of Doctor Who. We have a reprint underway but won't get copies until maybe the first or second week of December, and so anyone ordering for Christmas presents, especially if you are not in the UK, may be disappointed.

Likewise with copies of THE TARGET BOOK. We are currently sold out of the paperback, but have copies coming back to us from Australia. They are unlikely to arrive before Christmas though, so again, if you have ordered a copy and are hoping that it will arrive before Christmas, then you will probably be disappointed. There's nothing we can do about this. Shipments from overseas arrive as and when they do, and from Australia, you're looking at around a 5-6 week shipping time. We do still have some limited edition hardback copies of this book in stock though, and these would be despatched as soon as we get orders in.

Other titles, like LIBERATION, the guide to Blake's 7, are now sold out, and we're not intending a reprint of them. Unfortunately we have to let some stock slip out of print to make way for new titles.

As we move towards Christmas, we will do our best to fill and despatch all orders as soon as we can so that they hopefully arrive for customers in time.

RELEASE UPDATES

TIMELINK seems to be on the final path to publication now. We have the final changes made to the PDFs, and are just finalising them ready for print at the moment. Hopefully we'll be able to go to print before Christmas on the book and then get copies back after, ready to despatch as a new year present to everyone who has been so patient in waiting for the book. I will also be emailing everyone who has ordered it as soon as we finalise the pricing for it, to confirm the details and to explain the process for refunds should anyone want them.

RELEASE UPDATES

The good news is that End of Ten is now available in both paperback and hardback editions. We're especially pleased with the hardback - it's a gorgeous edition adorned with exclusive artwork by the very talented Iain Robertson. Hopefully those who get this edition will appreciate the care and attention lavished on it.

Wiped has also just gone off to print - so we're expecting finished copies around the end of October on that, but as usual we will be sending them out to everyone who has preordered as soon as we get them in stock. It's a great looking book, 480 pages packed with everything you could possibly want to know about Doctor Who's missing episodes, their recovery and restoration.

MORE NEW TITLES

We're pleased to announce that Telos will be publishing new paperback editions of two more of Mike Ripley's popular 'Angel' series of crime novels. Angel City and Angel Confidential should be available early next year.

The novels chart the adventures of Fitzroy Maclean Angel, a character who gets by partly through gigging as a jazz trumpet player, partly through taking illegal fares in his de-registered black taxi cab, and partly through … well, just being in the right place at the right time. And, as he often says himself, it’s better to be lucky than good.

In Angel City, down on his luck and broke, Angel is forced to get two jobs - and one is definitely dodgy. He is drawn into a series of underworlds, from the twilight world of London's homeless to that of role-playing fantasies, where the monsters suddenly become real and the games aren't so funny any more.

Angel Confidential is a case involving a dubious religious cult, an impoverished minor aristocrat with a love of classic cars, a very shady solicitor and his extremely odd wife.

Also, work has started on the next of Telos' acclaimed guides to Doctor Who with an as yet untitled volume covering Mat Smith's first season as the Doctor. This will also be published next year, and should cover the series, plus the Christmas Special, along with the Proms, Doctor Who Live and whatever else the production team sends our way before the end of this year. We'd welcome suggestions for the title for this volume. To remind you, we have used already: Back to the Vortex, Second Flight, Third Dimension, Monsters Within and End of Ten. Who knows, if you come up with something we like, then we may even use it on the book!

We're pleased to report that the hardback for End of Ten arrived on Friday, and very lovely it looks too. We're sorting out the copies for everyone at the moment, figuring out who wants which limitation numbers, and they should be posted off on Monday.

It also looks like the book is sold out already - we need to collate the orders and shop orders to double check.

INSIDE TELOS

People often contact Telos asking about our staff, offices, Marketing Managers ... and I have to suppress a wry smile, as although we hopefully publish some great looking books, we're not big enough to be able to warrant any of those things ... instead we do everything ourselves.

So a little insight into how Telos works might help to allay some questions from interested readers, and might also help to explain why sometimes it takes a little longer to process orders or to get things sorted out.

So ... you place an order through the online site ... what happens next?

Well the first thing that happens is that Debbie Bennett, who handles all the online ordering, picks the order up either on an email or from the Paypal system, and logs it into her Master Database Of Everything Telos. If what has been ordered is not published yet, then she holds all these orders until the book is published. For things which are available, then approximately once a week (holidays and real life intruding) she pulls the list off the Database and emails it down to Sam and I.

We then print that off, and then Sam (usually, because I am often at the office doing my real job) heads to the stockroom to find the titles, packages them up and addresses them. If I am around then I will help with bigger orders, packaging them, wrapping in bubble wrap and so on. When a new title comes in, then Debs will send us *all* the held orders for it, and we then print labels off and sort out all the customer orders, review copies, author copies, free copies, and shop orders ... this often takes a whole weekend or longer to sort out. Sam is incredible at maintaining all the order details, invoices and delivery notes, sorting out courier pickups and deliveries ... all the stuff that keeps our titles coming from us to you basically. Did I mention that she's amazing!

We then hike them all down the post office once they're done - and this can take several evenings/weekends, and the Post Office trips can be by foot (if just a few) or by car (if there's loads) and can also take several visits to sort it all out from UK orders to America, Australia, Europe and everywhere in between.

So the upshot is that it can easily take a couple of weeks from when you place the order, to when it actually gets to the Post Office ... which is why we say to allow 28 days before querying ... Indeed, the Post Office will also take a few days to get the order to you, but that part of it is pretty much out of our hands!

Of course if the book isn't published yet, then we can't send it, and I try and keep the website up to date, and post updates here on the News Blog as the expected/predicted dates slip and slide due to everything from Printer schedules, to layout being far more complex than expected, and everyone's available time to work on Telos things changing due to the real world intruding.

So there you have it ... a brief day in the life of a Telos order ...

TELOS WINS BRITISH FANTASY AWARD

As many of you know (because I mentioned it in a news item earlier in the year), this year is Telos' tenth anniversary, so it was with pleasure that we discovered that we had been nominated, and then shortlisted for, the 2010 British Fantasy Awards.

We had never won this award, despite having been nominated and shortlisted before, and so at the ceremony, I was obviously hopeful, but with a selection of amazing independent presses in the shortlist, it was not obvious at all who might have won.

The Award is sponsored by the very wonderful PS Publishing (check out their incredible range of books at www.pspublishing.co.uk) and so PS Owners Pete and Nicky Crowther took to the stage to announce the Award. They went through all the candidates, generously praising each for their achievements and the quality of what they did ... and then the announcement.

When I heard 'Telos Publishing' ... it didn't sink in. I heard it. I couldn't quite believe it ... and then I welled up with tears. Oh goodness me! So I got from my seat and up onto the stage ... accepted the Award, nearly knocking it to the floor in my blurry clumsiness ... and then I tried to say some words. Those who know me will know that I am rarely lost for words, but I was ... and confronted by all my friends in the BFS in a packed room, I kind of lost it. In a mass of emotion and blubbering, I managed to thank the most important people ... and then headed back to my seat as I couldn't say any more. A proper 'Paltrow' moment.

What I hope I said, was that Telos does not exist in a vacuum and there are many people to thank for keeping it going for ten years. Foremost my business partner Stephen James Walker. Between us we make all the decisions - easy and difficult - and hopefully do our best to get the books that people want to buy out there. Then there's Rosemary Howe, who helped set Telos up, and who supported us all the way through. Cudos to my partner Sam, who keeps me sane, wrangles the orders, and who I love so, so much. There's Debbie Bennett who handles all the online orders for us; and our Webmasters who keep us looking good online: first Roger Anderson, and latterly Anthony Forth. There's Arnold T Blumberg who keeps our books looking fab inside. All our authors of course, and cover artists ... the printers and everyone behind the scenes who make sure that our babies are sent out into the world looking as great as they can.

And of course, to you the readers, and especially if you are in the BFS and voted for us. It means so much to win the award, as it's voted on by friends and peers and writers and people who I love and admire so much.

FIRST REVIEW OF END OF TEN

The book was waiting on the doormat when I got in from work, and I've just spent the last five hours or so reading it from cover-to-cover.

My thoughts:

In some of Mr. Walker's previous books of this type, my least favourite part (by a large margin) is usually the diary section that opens the book, which (probably due to its very nature rather than a fault on the part of the writer) can be a little dry, being mostly a list of Who-related news and media quotes from the period in question.

However, for some reason, the equivalent chapters in The End of Ten were much more enjoyable this time. Whether it was the layout, or the writing style, I can't quite put my finger on it. But certainly the 'News in Review' section this time out was a more engaging read than previously. Maybe the news was just more exciting that year, what with the Doctor changeover, and the various media rumours that surrounded the gap year and the regeneration!

The episode guide is usually my favourite part of these guidebooks, and once again End of Ten doesn't disappoint. The reviews are both extensive and fair, as always. Being a keen lurker in the 'Rate the episode' threads on GB, I was a little concerned that there was nothing new to say about these episodes, critically. How wrong I was! Even having read thousands of posts about these episodes, Mr Walker has managed to say something fresh about them, making new points I had never heard nor considered before.

Another thing about Mr Walker's reviews (and this is a carry over from his previous reviews going back as far as the old Handbook series) is that, even when he's not a big fan of a certain episode, he'll always spot a few things that he likes, highlighting both the good and the bad in every episode. Many Who reviews these days seem to be either ardent love or abusive hate - it's so nice to get some middle ground in there for a change. And even when I didn't agree with some of the reviews (I'm a big fan of 'The Waters of Mars', for example), Mr Walker's reviews are always heartfelt, fair, thought-provoking and above all, balanced.

There are some new chapters in here as well - a critique on RTD's pros and cons as showrunner, and the legacy he leaves (a great piece), as well as an analysis of the whole 'gap year' idea itself - did it work? Was it necessary? What were the motives behind it?

And also, as always, the usual facts and stats and ratings analysis.

I really cannot recommend this book highly enough - some of the viewpoints might be slightly controversial, but it's an enjoyable overview of the Specials that expertly manages to blend fact and opinion in one all-encompassing volume - one I'm sure to dip into for reference many times in the future. In partnership with Andrew Pixley's DWM Companion that covered the Specials, these two pubilcations ensure there is really no need for any other guide to the show as it was in 2009 - all bases seem to be well and truly covered!

What with their previous Who-related releases, and with Wiped, Timelink and the next Toybox Update all on the horizon also, Telos is undoubtedly now the ultimate resource for non-fiction Doctor Who books. Long may it continue!

TELOS ZOMBIES TAKE OVER THE WORLD!

Author of Telos' brilliant guide to Zombie films, Zombiemania, Dr Arnold T Blumberg, has hit the headlines all over the world with a course on the subject that he's running at the University of Baltimore. Students taking English 333 will watch 16 classic zombie films and read zombie comics. As an alternative to a final research paper they may write scripts or draw storyboards for their ideal zombie flicks.

Arnold has been somewhat taken aback by all the interest. 'It's huge, beyond any huge that the university or I expected,' he commented. 'The Baltimore Sun article was first on Monday, then it was picked up by the AP. By the next morning, there were 200-some versions online and radio and TV requests came in from the US, UK, Australia, China, Mexico and Belgrade...so far (I think now it's like 300). They're still coming. I'll be on FOX News here in the States on Monday morning!'

BOOK ARRIVALS

We have today taken delivery of the paperback edition of END OF TEN, and copies of the two new Graham Masterton novels, THE DJINN and RULES OF DUEL.

We will be mailing these out to everyone who has pre-ordered over the next week or so.

The Hardback edition of END OF TEN should be arriving in another couple of weeks.

WIPED is currently expected sometime in October.

BOOK UPDATE

A quick update on the status of the titles we have underway at the moment:

END OF TEN - this is now at the printers, and we're expecting finished copies by the end of August.

RULES OF DUEL - this is also at the printers, copies are expected end of August

THE DJINN - we have just signed off on the internal art by Daniele Serra for this title, and as soon as we get the completed PDF back, then this too will be off to print, again expected back end of August.

WIPED - the text for this title is now complete, and it's with the designer for layout. We're hoping that this title will be available sometime in September.

TIMELINK - the long-delayed guide to DOCTOR WHO Continuity is nearing the end of its checking. When we get the comments back on the proofs, then these will be updated, the massive manuscript split into two books, and then off to print. We're hoping we might get the books physically available by the end of September again.

TOYBOX UPDATE NO 3 - This is with Arnold at the moment for final checking, some writing, and the massive layout task. It's underway, and we're still hopeful that this title will see print by the end of the year.

As always, pre-orders will be despatched as soon as we receive copies, but please be aware that at this time of year there can be delays due to holidays, and we know that during the last two weeks of August we won't be in a position to despatch any titles ordered in this period, or which arrive during this period. We will catch up early September with everything outstanding.

TELOS REACHES 10,000TH ONLINE ORDER

Telos Publishing has been running for ten years in 2010, and by a strange coincidence we realised that we were also close to reaching the 10,000th online order received for our titles. Telos traditionally sells many more copies through bricks and mortar (and latterly online) bookstores via our distributors than we do through online direct from Telos, and so this is no mean feat. We therefore decided that we would give the 10,000th order free, and refund whichever customer it was with the cost of whatever they ordered.

The order actually arrived yesterday, the 1st August, and the customer who placed that order was Clive Eardley. We were delighted to be able to offer Clive a refund for his order, doubly so as he has been a supporter of Telos for many years.

With so many small presses closing in recent years, it's a pleasure that Telos is still going strong, and hopefully still publishing great books which customers love to buy. Hitting 10,000 online orders is an incredible achievement, and our thanks go out to everyone who has ever bought one of our books.

Wiped! Doctor Who's Missing Episodes

In the 1960s, the BBC screened 253 episodes of its cult science fiction show Doctor Who, starring William Hartnell and then Patrick Troughton as the time travelling Doctor. Yet by 1975, the Corporation had wiped the master tapes of every single one of these episodes. Of the 124 Doctor Who episodes starring Jon Pertwee shown between 1970 and 1974, the BBC destroyed over half of the original transmission tapes within two years of their original broadcast.

In the years that followed, the BBC, along with dedicated fans of the series, began the arduous task of trying to track down copies of as many missing Doctor Who episodes as possible. The search covered BBC sales vaults, foreign television stations, overseas archives, and numerous networks of private film collectors, until the tally of missing programmes was reduced to just 108 episodes.

Wiped! covers a somewhat contentious aspect of the BBC's history, that of their wholescale throwing away of archive television recordings from the sixties, in a period leading to around 1977/8 when it was largely stopped by the intervention of concerned individuals.

Richard Molesworth has painstakingly peeled back the layers behind these actions, finding out exactly what was destroyed and when, and then chronicling the attempts of fans to locate and replace the BBC's lost archive of Doctor Who material - with a large degree of success.

Graham Masterton wrote Rules of Duel between 1964 and 1970, when he was friends with William S Burroughs, the creator of the literarily acclaimed intersection writing technique. Recently rediscovered, this is a thought-provoking, triumphant and poetic tribute to Burroughs. Rules of Duel is a clever and pervasive novel, which turns literature on its head, and makes the reader work to be part of the evolving plot. Complete with original introduction by Burroughs, written before his death in 1997, Rules of Duel is a previously unpublished masterpiece from two of the greatest writers of their generations.

MAKING THE RULES

Rules of Duel is an exciting project for Telos. Not only to be working with Graham Masterton again, who is officially one of the nicest people on the planet, but also to be publishing a new work by the legendary William S Burroughs! The book was written between 1967 and 1970 by Graham and William when they were friends in London. Graham takes up the tale:

'I wrote most of Rules of Duel in the evenings after work, but I would take pages around to William’s apartment for him to read and comment on. It is set in London in the late 1960s and the hero is a newspaper reporter who suspects that central government is trying to introduce some repressive plan to control everybody in the capital. When it was finished I showed it to Wolf Mankowitz the film director and he loved it, and (if you don't mind me being big-headed) called it a "psychedelic masterpiece." "Psychedelic" how's that for dating it? Unfortunately he thought that it was probably unfilmable. William used one or two sentences from Rules of Duel in Nova Express, and he also said that he had used some in The Ticket That Exploded but I have never been able to find any in that particular book of his.

'Rules of Duel is written in the style that William and Brion Gysin devised called "intersection writing". This means that the writer follows factual coincidences and synonyms as if they are a kind of code. It is an entertainment more than a mystical way of expressing yourself. I also used William's method of cutting up sentences so that they are more than a mystical kind of code. This means that William hits exactly the right note.

'William and I talked a lot about the whole Rules of Duel concept, which was to educate young people, help them to become literate but, more than literate, to give them their own language which would not only give them more control of their own lives in an increasingly technological world, but free them from the baneful influence of politicians and old farts. In some ways, much of that has come to pass in the internet age.

'William told me one evening that he felt as if he had never lived the life he was supposed to live, and that somehow he had ended up as an outsider on the edge of his own existence. This could well have been brought on by the displaced feeling he had when he was living in London, but throughout his work there is always an underlying sense of lives that never worked out ... of opportunities missed or squandered. There is such strong nostalgia, too, even for places that he never visited. Overall, I think he felt that nobody else could see the world the way he saw it, or think the thoughts that he was capable of thinking, and sometimes I think that made him feel desperately detached. That is what Rules of Duel is all about, that feeling of alienation in London in the late 1960s, that feeling that officialdom is always watching you and out to get you. That's why I thought it so appropriate to see it published today, when we are back to heavy-handed state control and surveillance.'

Miller, a university professor, and two of his students take a trip out to a spoil island in the middle of Santa Rosa Sound in the Florida Keys to study the effects of pollution on the flora and fauna. CAPE WRATH by Paul Finch
Craeghatir: a lonely rock, far out on the northernmost tip of Britain; the closest point of land to it, the wild, storm-ravaged Cape Wrath.

Professor Jo Mercy of Warwick University's elite archaeological unit doesn't believe the rumours and is keen to investigate a newly-discovered barrow on the island which might contain the remains of Ivar Ragnarsson, perhaps the most infamous of all Viking chieftains.
Ragnarsson was reputed to be berserkir - a warrior possessed with the wolf-spirit, whose madness carried him past all pain and reason in the heat of battle, and whose victims were deemed offerings to the wolf-god Fenrir. But Mercy and her team will find themselves faced with more than just the inhospitable environment on Craeghatir, as the spirit of Ragnarsson is disturbed and death and madness come to the island.

IT LIVES AGAIN! AWARDS

We're absolutely delighted to announce that Telos Publishing scooped the Silver Award in the Performing Arts category at ForeWord Magazine's Book of the Year Awards, announced at BookExpo America in New York in April. The winning title was Axelle Carolyn's It Lives Again!, an analysis of the modern horror film.

ForeWord Reviews' Book of the Year Awards were established to bring increased attention to librarians and booksellers of the literary and graphic achievements of independent publishers and their authors. ForeWord is the only review trade journal devoted exclusively to books from independent houses.

STOCK UPDATE

It's always pleasing when sales are booming, but this brings its own challenges. We have just sold out of the signed copies of Simon Clark's brilliant horror novella Humpty's Bones, and so thanks to everyone who has supported this great title. We will be reprinting, but the new print run will be unsigned.

We are also sold out again of the new guide to Space: 1999, Destination: Moonbase Alpha, and unfortunately the reprint will need to have its price increased to £15.99 to cover an increase in printing costs as well as to set the price point to something more appropriate given the size of the title. Long-time Telos customers will know that we always try and honour the prices originally set for our books, but on this one, we were caught out a little by the eventual size of the book, and so the original £12.99 price was only just enough to cover the costs.

As soon as we have copies of both books back in stock again, then I'll add a note here.

While we're talking about signed copies, we have available a very limited number of copies of Axelle Carolyn's fabulous guide to modern horror films, It Lives Again!, signed by both Axelle, and by top film director Neil Marshall, who provided the foreword for the book. These were originally signed at a Borders event in London, but Borders went bancrupt shortly afterwards (hopefully nothing to do with us!), and we were lucky to be able to retrieve most of the copies from them. Therefore anyone ordering It Lives Again! direct from Telos will receive, completely free of charge, these special signed editions while we have copies available.

We have just taken delivery of two more titles.

First off is the simply gorgeous full colour artbook by Vincent Chong, Altered Visions. This is being publishing in limited numbers for the World Horror Convention in Brighton at the end of March.

Second is Silver Scream Volume 2, another slice of black and white (and some colour) horror from 1941 to 1951 by Steven Warren Hill. The book is profusely illustrated with black and white pictures, and contains extensive original biographical notes on just about everyone involved in the films discussed.

PRICE INCREASES

It's never nice to have to increase prices, but unfortunately Telos is at the whim of paper manufacturers and book printers and also the British Post Office for shipping costs, and over the last year or so, despite the apparent recession, prices have been slowly creeping up. We have managed to retain prices at more or less the same level for the last couple of years, but we can't do this any longer. Therefore we have little choice but to follow suit to ensure that our titles remain practical for us to publish at all.

Some of the currently available titles will increase their prices as and when we sell out of current stocks and go to reprints, and there will be a general rise in the postage rates come April, which is when the Post Office will be increasing all their prices again. Some of our forthcoming titles will also have to increase in price to take account of the current printing costs, but if you have pre-ordered, as usual we will always honour your orders at the price you originally paid, regardless of what the rrp of the books end up being.

So get in quick if you want to take advantage of current postage prices!

Steve and David were amazed to realise towards the end of last year, that 2010 actually marks ten years of Telos Publishing!

When we started the company back in 2000, we hoped it might last, but were realistic enough to try and ensure that what we published was of good quality both in terms of writing and physical appearance, in the hope that people would 'buy into' our work and hopefully return to sample other books and projects. Ten years on, and we're pleased and proud with what we have acheived. Well over 100 titles published, many, many pages of fiction and non-fiction put in print, some experimental titles published, but throughout it all, we have been just pleased as punch to have worked with many talented authors and artists who have worked with us on developing their projects into books we hope everyone could be proud of.

We first came to people's notice of course through the range of Doctor Who Novellas which we published under license to BBC Worldwide. We're still so proud of that range of books - some of the best Doctor Who fiction ever published - and of course that enabled us to start publishing other projects and ranges. Along the way our titles have managed to pick up several awards: the Aurealis Award for Best Novel for Fallen Gods, an industry production and design Award for Shell Shock, a British Fantasy Best Novella Award for Breathe, and of course a World Fantasy Award for our publishing work in 2006. There have been many other nominations and shortlisted titles, and we're always overjoyed when our work gets noticed by the people who buy and read it. We do this because we love books, we love publishing, and we love good writing - in whatever genre.

To celebrate ten years as a UK Small Press - and in this time a great many other small presses have come and gone - we are kicking off the year with a celebratory party panel at the Gallifrey One convention in LA at the end of February. This is probably the world's biggest regular Doctor Who convention, and it also embraces other genres too. Unfortunately Steve is unable to attend, but David will be there, and we will have several of our authors at the event. Hopefully attendees will join us at 5pm on the Saturday afternoon to reminisce about the books, and to look forward to the future of Telos. After the publication delays of 2009 (caused in part by changes in David's personal life) we will hopefully get back on schedule for 2010. The book on Space:1999 is now published, and the ones on Sapphire and Steel and Silver Scream Vol 2 are due to complete layout imminently and then they too will be off to print. We are on a mission to get Timelink finished this year - and what a MAMMOTH task that is! Over 1400 pages of detailed layout to be considered and executed - and then there's other new titles bubbling under as well which we're looking forward to letting people know about as soon as they are closer to publication.

Telos will be at the annual World Horror Convention in 2010, being held in the UK in Brighton for the first time, and we have two titles being launched there: Simon Clark's amazing new horror novella Humpty's Bones and an inspirational and incredible art book from Vincent Chong called Altered Visions.

Details of other events will be posted on the news pages as they are arranged.

Finally, David and Steve would like to thank all those people who keep Telos ticking over behind the scenes, without whom we wouldn't have been able to achieve what we have. Firstly, Telos's main man when it comes to layout and design, Arnold T Blumberg. Arnold was with us when we started Telos, and has stuck with us doing amazing work on the Toybox books, and even finding time to research and co-write Zombiemania, an in depth guide to zombie movies. Arnold was also the designer on Axelle Carolyn's impressive book about modern horror films, It Lives Again!, the layout of which has been universally praised. Arnold's help and advice has always been valued by us, and we're proud that he's part of our team. Secondly, a shout out to Debbie Bennett, who keeps the online ordering process ticking over for us, and who maintains the customer database. She too has been with us from the start, and is a rock of reliability! Our website would not be half as impressive if not for the work of Roger Anderson who acted as webmaster and guru for many years before stepping down a couple of years back. His place has been taken by Anthony Forth, who continues to keep the site running and updated - a critical part of the team in these online days. Thanks also to Rosemary Howe who handled all the trade ordering, and who also compiles the indexes for our books when they are needed. Her eagle eye has spotted many typos and bloopers over the years! Sam Stone is now looking after the trade side of things, and keeping the books supplied to the shops and distributors who order from us.

ABOUT VINCENT CHONG

Vincent Chong was born in 1981 in Manchester, England. According to his parents he started drawing from the age of two, but it has only been the past few years that he has been working as a professional freelance Illustrator and Designer.

His work has popped up on book and CD covers, magazines and websites around the world and he has been known to pick up the odd award or two.

Since his early days of drawing mutant turtles and ghost-busting heroes in pen on scraps of paper for friends, he has evolved his illustration technique into a style that combines the use of graphic software and photography with traditional painting and drawing methods.

He currently lives alone in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in a self-imposed, semi-hermitic existence so that he can focus on producing more artwork for your viewing pleasure.

HUMPTY'S BONES AND ART BOOK

Release Delays

We're sorry to have to announce, but the release dates of the titles planned for 2009 are going to have to be put back to 2010. The reasons are mainly due to the fact that Telos is run in our spare time, and for David particularly, this year has seen a lot of change which has impacted being able to progress the books.

BOOK UPDATE

Things have been somewhat up in the air at Telos for the last few weeks ... We have just moved the Towers, brick by brick, to a new address in North Wales, and so the whole of the despatch area is in chaos at the moment!

We are slowly managing to process some orders, where we can find the boxes of books, but copies of some titles are eluding us at the moment and until we can make time to get all the boxes sorted out and through, then hopefully customers will accept our apologies. Part of the problem is that, although it is the middle of summer, we've not actually had a dry day yet, and we need that to be able to get the boxes all out of the storage, sorted out, and then put back in an order which means we know where everything is! As soon as we can we'll be getting things back and organised again.

On other subjects, the move has also delayed the titles we are intending to release this year. Work is moving on apace with the titles (Guides to Sapphire and Steel and Space: 1999, the next Toybox Update, and the second Silver Scream book, as well as the Doctor Who Continuity Guide) but there are delays. As soon as we have firmer dates for publication for these, then we'll get them added to the site. In the meantime, we can but apologise for the delays.

IT LIVES AGAIN SIGNING

Horror hit Borders in Oxford Street last night with a talk and signing event for the new Telos hardback It Lives Again! Horror Movies in the New Millennium by Axelle Carolyn.

Axelle and her husband, film director Neil Marshall, were present with Telos' publisher David J Howe to discuss modern horror. David surprised them with a bag full of DVDs which were used to facilitate discussion of the different styles and genres of horror which have developed over the last ten years or so. Discussion ranged from the remake trend which brought us reimagined versions of Halloween and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as well as classics like The Thing. J-Horror was covered as were films from Spain, Russia, Ireland and New Zealand ...

Neil's own films were discussed, with revelations that The Descent was almost totally filmed at Pinewood with no real caves involved, and some snippets of information about the forthcoming Centurian, which Neil is completing editing on.

After the discussion, the many attendees enjoyed free wine, soft drinks and nibbles courtesy of Borders and Telos Publishing, while chatting further to Neil and Axelle and getting copies of the book signed.

The evening seemed to be a roaring success, with the discussion packed to standing room only and everyone having a good time.

Telos would like to thank Neil and Axelle for their time, Mark, Julie and Becci at Borders for some fabulous promotion, support and for getting it all organised for us, and everyone who came along for supporting the event and the book.

AXELLE CAROLYN

Axelle Carolyn has been a horror fan for as long as she can remember. Brought up on a steady diet of scary movies and Stephen King novels, she soon began contributing to several genre websites, then to 'Fangoria', 'SFX', 'L'Ecran Fantastique', IGN.com and 'The Dark Side', for whom she conducted hundreds of interviews and covered dozens of festivals and film shoots. She recently started writing fiction.

Axelle is also an actress, and her credits include 'The Descent 2' as well as a series of independent genre features. She recently collaborated with her husband, Neil Marshall, on 'Centurion', in which she plays Aeron, a Pict warrior.

NEIL MARSHALL

Neil Marshall wrote, directed and edited his first feature in 2002, the soldiers-VS-werewolves movie 'Dog Soldiers', which gained cult status on both sides of the Atlantic. His 2005 follow-up, acclaimed horror movie 'The Descent', earned him a British Independent Film Award for Best Director and a Saturn Award for Best Horror Film. 'Doomsday', released in 2008 by Universal Pictures, was Neil's homage to 1980s post-apocalyptic movies.

His next film, 'Centurion', follows a group of Roman legionnaires caught behind enemy lines in Scotland, and is currently in post-production.

Timelink Update

Timelink is probably the most anticipated and most delayed title that Telos has ever featured on its lists! I thought it was worth posting a quick update so people know that we're still working on it, and still hoping to get it published this year.

Work is progressing apace and now the massive undertaking of laying the text out has begun. Arnold is working on this, figuring out how to make all the lists, comments and boxouts work, and how to keep the whole thing readable.

One issue which has arisen is that the book looks to be running to around 1300 pages! This is quite a problem as the most that a paperback can reasonably have with our printers is around the 800 mark. So rather than resort to a 6 point font with a free magnifying glass with every book, we have instead decided to publish the title as two volumes, splitting the text between them. Therefore, when ordering re-opens, the price will be £24.99 for both the two volumes. We have decided not to offer them individually as there didn't seem to be much point ... it is all one book after all.

Anyone who pre-ordered the book at the earlier price, will still receive BOTH volumes at that price - one of the benefits of ordering early from Telos, is that if the price subsequently rises, we will always try and honour the original orders at the original price. For example early orderers of It Lives Again!, got the book for £14.99 rather than the published £16.99. At Telos Towers we were pleased to see Monsters Within make an appearance in the Doctor Who Magazine poll for Best Non-Fiction title of 2008. We wanted to say a quick thank you to everyone who voted for the book, the results of which have just been published in the latest issue. We were delighted to see it come fifth in the non-fiction category (which was justifiably topped by the brilliant tome The Writer's Tale by Russell T Davies), when it must have had only a small fraction of the sales of the four BBC books that came ahead of it, and had zero coverage in the Magazine itself. Saturday 14th February saw a number of Telos authors heading over to the totally fab Dark Delicacies store in Burbank, LA for a small launch for the new title Silver Scream, as well as signings of The Target Book and Zombiemania, plus Sam Stone signing copies of her novel Killing Kiss (available from the House of Murky Depths).

We arrived as the previous signees were clearing up - several very attractive young ladies from Strippers and Corpses magazine (!) - and once they had packed away the rotting corpse they had brought with them, we took over the tables.

As usual, Sue and Del, the owners, were fabulous and while signing copies we chatted about the state of horror fiction and the quest for truly 'horrific' short stories for the anthologies which Del edits, while enjoying the complimentary drinks.

The signing was over all too soon, and before leaving we browsed the store which was, as usual, crammed with all manner of horror goodness.

Thanks to Del and Sue for their hospitality and for flying the flag of horror so wonderfully. Long may they continue!

TIMELINK COVER REVEALED

The long-delayed exploration of Doctor Who continuity, Jon Preddle's Timelink, is finally set to be published later this year, and we have just had the cover completed.

The artist is the amazingly talented Iain Robertson, and hopefully the cover sums up all that the book is about: dates and times and continuity between Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

As soon as we have a firm publication date for the book, then this will be announced.

LA SIGNING

A couple of quick updates.

SILVER SCREAM - we have now been given a delivery date for this of next Wednesday - 10th December. As soon as we get copies in then we'll get them off to the people who have pre-ordered.

MONSTERS WITHIN - no actual date on this as yet but it is at the printers, and we're hoping that we might get copies of the paperback in next week as well. The hardback unfortunately won't be available now until Jan 2009. As usual we will be sending copies out to everyone who has preordered as soon as we get copies ourselves.

Finally, as usual we are trying to process orders as quickly as we can at this time of year ... hopefully everyone will get their orders in time for Christmas, post willing!

TITLE UPDATE

A quick update on the new titles from Telos.

Struggling to meet the Christmas deadlines is always a challenge, and this year we have had some success, but also some disappointment.

SILVER SCREAM VOLUME 1 is at the printers at the moment and we have an estimated delivery date of 5 December for that, so hopefully copies will be despatched and arrive in time for Christmas.

MONSTERS WITHIN, the guide to 2008's Doctor Who series, is all ready to go, and we're waiting on some final printing estimates before that goes off. We're hopeful that we'll have that before Christmas as well, but I'll try and keep updates coming here to let people know.

IT LIVES AGAIN is unfortunately the casualty, falling foul of increased printing prices meaning that we can't afford to print in the UK as we had hoped to. Therefore we're looking to print this title overseas which means we won't have copies in time for Christmas. This is something of a disappointment to us all as we really wanted this superb book to be available this year. We want to put some of the layouts from the book online as soon as we can arrange it so people can see what the book is like inside, and I hope this may encourage folks to get their orders in.

Apologies to anyone who was hoping for all these titles this year, but unfortunately circumstances have conspired to make this impossible.

Telos Publishing is proud to announce that the audio rights in the popular Time Hunter series have been picked up by Fantom Films, and the first two stories in the range, The Cabinet of Light and The Winning Side, are due to be released in November 2008.

REPRINTS

I've had a couple of people ask about the status of the reprint editions of some of our titles. I thought it was therefore worth mentioning them here as others might also be wondering ...

First, The Target Book. The reprint for this is underway, but because it is printed in India, we're not certain when we might get finished copies. This could be 6-8 weeks away because of the time it takes to ship them to us. As soon as we get copies, we will be despatching them to those who are waiting.

Howe's Transcendental Toybox: Update No 2: 2004-2005 is also being reprinted, but in this case we want to do the reprint as a full colour book (the original was in black and white). Therefore we are having to re-prepare the files for printing. This is nearly complete, and as soon as we have that sorted, then the book will be off to print. I would conservatively estimate that as being available for despatch in about 4 weeks time, though as this is the first time we'll have prepped a book for full colour printing in this way, there could be unforeseen delays along the way.

As with The Target Book, as soon as we have copies for despatch, they'll be sent out.

FULL COLOUR TOYBOX

HOWE'S TRANSCENDENTAL TOYBOX is the only guide to all DOCTOR WHO merchandise and collectibles. While we are preparing the next update volume (to cover everything released in 2006 and 2007), the UPDATE NUMBER 2 edition, which covers 2004 and 2005, has sold out in its standard edition. UPDATE ON TIMELINK: THE GUIDE TO DOCTOR WHO CONTINUITY

A couple of people have emailed us recently asking about the status on Timelink, the guide to Doctor Who continuity.

The current plan for Timelink is to publish some time in 2009. The main issue has been deciding just when to publish a guide to continuity given that there is, as well as regular seasons of Doctor Who, also Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures to consider. After discussions with Jon Preddle, the author, we've decided to take it up to the end of this current season of Doctor Who, and then to publish in 2009 during the 'gap' year for the series which hopefully will mean that it will stay current for slightly longer.

BOOK UPDATE

It's been a little time since I posted an update here ... things have been moving along behind the scenes and we're working on a pile of new titles for the latter part of this year.

Two have been announced already - Something in the Darkness, our guide to the second season of Torchwood, and Angel on the Inside, another brilliant crime novel from Mike Ripley. Hopefully before long we'll be able to announce the remaining titles, but until we have them developed to a stage we're happy they will broadly meet the dates we intend, then it's not really fair to give the details out.

Apologies for the delay in posting an update here on this edition. Christmas and the New Year completely got in the way ...

We received finished copies of the hardback edition about a week before Christmas, and we promptly despatched them to everyone who had pre-ordered the title. Hopefully the majority arrived in time for Christmas, and our apologies to anyone who received it later on.

The entire run of Time Hunter titles is still available from Telos in paperback, though some titles are now in short demand. In hardback we still have copies of all but the very first title - The Winning Side - in stock, but again as these are limited to 100 numbered copies only of each, they are going fast.

NEW TITLES FOR 2008

Telos Publishing is proud to announce two new titles for later in 2008, pre-ordering for which is available now.

First there's the follow-up volume to our highly acclaimed guide to the first series of Torchwood. Something In The Darkness: The Unofficial and Unauthorised Guide to Torchwood Series 2 does what it says on the tin. Reaction to the first Torchwood book, Inside The Hub, was extremely positive indeed, and with the second series starting this week on BBC2, it's time to get reaquainted with Captain Jack, Gwen, Ianto, Owen and Toshiko. If you love this dark and gritty series then you'll want to have this book on your shelves.

We're also doing another hardback volume for this book to match the edition we did of the first title. So get your orders in quick if you want a copy as they will be a limited edition of only 100 copies, all signed by the author.

Second, and following the success of Telos' paperback editions of Mike Ripley's first three 'Angel' novels, we are pleased and proud to present a fourth novel, Angel On The Inside. This is actually the tenth in the series and has never had a paperback edition before.

An update on the status of this. We had the books delivered, but the silver stamping on the front cover had not been completed. So the books have now been collected by the printers and they are sorting this out for us at the moment. I don't have an eta as yet as to when we will get the completed books back again, but I'm hoping it will be before Christmas and of course as soon as we do get them, then we'll be sending the copies out to everyone who has preordered them.
